Letter: Richmond School District needs to respect EAs

The Richmond School District is constantly hiring new teachers.

Dear Editor,

Some of the children in our schools face greater challenges than others, so to help these students we have educational assistants otherwise known as EAs. A history of underfunding has created shortages of EAs.  I understand that recently the school district trained two classes of EAs but rather than integrate them with existing EAs, they ignored the hiring process laid out in the collective agreement and snubbed the existing employees.  This caused disharmony between the groups. Of course the union filed a grievance but that will take time to resolve.

Why is it so difficult for the school district to simply follow the rules?
