Richmond is creating more options for going after illegal short-term rentals.

Dear Editor,

Re: “Airbnbs thriving in Richmond,” Letters, Feb. 21.

The City of Richmond is strongly committed to curbing illegal short term rentals within our community. City council recently updated the bylaw regulations introduced in 2017 to control short term rentals with additional enforcement tools.

To ensure compliance with local bylaws, city staff has conducted more than 1,000 home inspections in the past two years and taken a variety of actions, including issuing tickets or initiating prosecution.

As the result of city actions, more than 500 illegal operations have ceased short term rental activity. Operators often agree to comply with the bylaws. There has also been a significant reduction in the number of local listings for short term rentals appearing in a number of languages on a variety of popular websites.

We have also seen a significant increase in the number of legal bed and breakfast operations within Richmond. This ensures the legitimate supply of various short term visitor accommodation options operated in a manner that is controlled and respects community concerns.

Unfortunately, there remain some operators who repeatedly and flagrantly disregard city regulations. However, because our bylaws staff are proactive and determined to combat this type of activity, their efforts make a real difference.

Residents can also help. If you suspect an illegal short term rental, send an email to [email protected].
