Dear Editor,
It’s “Children First,” as an election-slogan.
How about “Seniors First,” when it comes to affordable housing.
More and more seniors face the fact that after several annual rent increases, their disposable income has shrunk to dangerously low levels.
In B.C., the annual allowable rent increase is two per cent plus inflation. This year, that means landlords are allowed to charge a 3.7 per cent rent increase — up from 2.9 per cent last year.
I would certainly vote for any party that would work out a more fair formula by lowering the allowable rent increase for qualifying seniors by eliminating the extra two per cent, for example.
