Dear Editor,
Re: “Brodie should support tunnel commuters,” Letters, Sept. 13.
Keith Munro’s ongoing advocacy for a new bridge continuously fails to provide any meaningful data about why a bridge is such a good idea.
To merely parrot public polls that favour a 10-lane bridge that serves a relatively small population (when other options are well-researched) is meaningless and only reinforces the fact that much of the public is ill-informed on the subject and generally self-interested.
Of course they want a new bridge, whatever the cost and whatever the ecological impact.
That the public is ignorant and prone to knee-jerk responses is natural. That is why there are politicians who we elect, who (hopefully) inform themselves of the issues beyond echoing public opinion and steer policy and decision-making in the direction of greatest good for the greatest number of people, plants and animals.
The facts put forward by bridge opponents are generally well-researched, coming from many expert and deeply informed points of view, from academics to geologists to independent engineers to professional ecologist to transportation experts.
I applaud our mayor and council for their position of putting the breaks on the reckless plans enacted by the previous provincial government with its lack of research and concern for the greater good.
