Letter: Pier plans not at all ‘ship shape’

Dear Editor

The dust hasn’t settled on the previous tall ship fiasco that left behind a string of useless pilings as a testimonial to the fact that city hall has absolutely no maritime experience.

Now, city hall is putting together a plan to waste even more money on a new dock and one lonely tall ship.

This is insulting to the people of Richmond. There is no mention of involving a maritime expert and someone qualified to deal with Fraser River transportation, moorage, docking, etc.

What is even more shocking is the fact that city hall has already sent a delegation to Japan to negotiate the terms for Japan to send a tall ship. Now, they propose sending a second negotiating team. All of this comes at the taxpayer’s expense.

City hall is out of control, and the elected council must not be free to withdraw monies from any fund in order to promote their pet projects.

Why doesn’t the city try to clean up the Onni mess in Steveston and use that frontage for a tall ship? This could lead to a proper marina which would be very much welcomed by the boating/sailing community.
