Letter: Onni does little to help trapped pigeons

Onni Steveston boardwalk
The Steveston boardwalk has been subject to rezoning applications from Onni Group for over a decade. In 2012 the developer constructed six buildings on maritime/industrial zoned land, which it paid for in 2001. Onni, for a fourth summer in a row, is now seeking more lucrative commercial zoning on the site. Feb. 2016.

Dear Editor,

Last week, there was a repair done to the eaves in one of the Imperial Landing buildings.

It had been gaping open for at least two weeks and the stairs were taped off for “safety.”

The area was sealed back up, along with whatever pigeons didn’t manage to escape, probably babies, on Monday.

I heard them trying to get out on Monday night so immediately contacted Onni to let them know. I asked for a call back, so I could be sure they had been rescued.

I spent the next two days trying to have something done, but Onni could not have been less helpful.

I also contacted the city and RAPS, but as it is private property, I was told they couldn’t do anything either.

I don’t know if the birds were ever removed as Onni refused to call me back.

By Wednesday, I could no longer hear them.

May the buildings sit empty forever or until they fall down.
