Letter: No decisions yet for pier

Dear Editor: Re: “Changes eyed for Garry Point Park, Steveston Harbour,” News Nov. 13.
McNulty pier
Coun. Bill McNulty is hoping the abandoned pilings, in the background, at Garry Point, can be used in a bid to build a new pier that could welcome deep draft tall ships to the city during Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations in 2017.

Dear Editor:

Re: “Changes eyed for Garry Point Park, Steveston Harbour,” News Nov. 13.

I’m writing to clarify the city’s plans for a possible pier at Garry Point Park, which has been reported in the Richmond News and commented on by a number of letter writers.

To be clear, nothing has been approved for Garry Point Park. Rather, staff recently presented a proposal to council’s parks, recreation and cultural services committee, which suggested constructing a permanent legacy pier at Garry Point Park in response to a request from committee to investigate options for new legacy amenities.

Staff’s recommendation was not accepted by the committee, instead, committee has asked for an update on the overall Garry Point Park master plan.

Staff will bring back a process for the master plan update in 2016 which will seek community feedback regarding the entire Garry Point Park plan.

Councillor Bill McNulty
