Dear Editor,
Re: “We know why bridge is being built,” Letters, Feb. 10.
I am amazed by the misinformation being spread by a previously published letter.
Let me give it to you straight: the George Massey Bridge is a necessary infrastructure project for our community.
The George Massey Tunnel is on its last legs. It is seismically unsound and the cost to bring it up to code would be enormous.
A 1959-engineered solution is not a viable transportation strategy for 2016!
We need to move our community and city forward. That means supporting our commuters and their families by cutting commute times by 30 minutes.
It means improving safety by reducing collisions by at least 35 per cent.
It also means improving transit with dedicated lanes. All of this will be accomplished with the construction of a bridge. I also want to tackle the myth that the bridge is going to lead to further industrialization of the river.
The height of the bridge will match the Alex Fraser Bridge located further up the river. Also, there are no plans to dredge the river after the completion of the bridge and the removal of the tunnel.
Our MLAs — Linda Reid, Teresa Wat and John Yap — are doing a solid job representing and advocating for Richmond in the legislature and within our government.
The tunnel is a $3.5 billion investment in Richmond and Delta. It is a signal that the provincial government is paying attention to our needs as a growing and economically important region.
