Dear Editor,
Re: “Life before the tunnel,” Letters, Sept. 1.
In rummaging through your letters section, I came across a letter written by a woman by the name of Wray who offers that she was born in the century prior and that she can recall that a barge was used to cross the Fraser River where the Massey Tunnel now sits firmly embedded in the silt.
Not that it matters a whit, I, too, was born in those bygone days, but unlike her, I lived in Saskatchewan during the Great Depression and experienced much, much more hardships that a mere barge crossing of a river. Oh, well, that was then and this is now.
I suppose that both Ms. Wray and Richmond Mayor Brodie are jumping up and down with glee now that the NDP has dumped the proposed Fraser River bridge in favour of, what? More studies to go along with 150 currently lying on tables and shelves begging to be read and acted upon?
According to media, the NDP minister responsible for boondoggles has stated she will “go back to square one.” If she really wants to go back to square one, then read the ruddy reports; but, no, she wants to spend more taxpayers’ money on going back to square one.
Reference has been made to the idea that a bridge will add congestion to the existing situation with the unstated comment that by retaining and/or expanding the Massey Tunnel none of that will happen. It seems that Trudeau’s pot party has begun, firmly planted in Richmond.
The Lower Mainland region’s population will increase and with that comes more vehicles struggling to squeeze through a pension-aged tunnel. So, we’re faced with more years of studying just to satisfy personal egos and political aims.
