Letter: Look back for a way forward in village

Dear Editor, Re: “Merchants want full boardwalk details,” Richmond News, Letters, July 21. Here we go again on the merry-go-round. In my opinion, there is unfinished business that will solve the whole thing once and for all.
Onni Steveston boardwalk
The Steveston boardwalk has been subject to rezoning applications from Onni Group for over a decade. In 2012 the developer constructed six buildings on maritime/industrial zoned land, which it paid for in 2001. Onni, for a fourth summer in a row, is now seeking more lucrative commercial zoning on the site. Feb. 2016.

Dear Editor,

Re: “Merchants want full boardwalk details,” Richmond News, Letters, July 21.

Here we go again on the merry-go-round.

In my opinion, there is unfinished business that will solve the whole thing once and for all. And that is to turn the empty retail spaces on the Onni development into a BC Packers legacy centre.

BC Packers wanted to see a legacy to their company somewhere on their portion of the waterfront, and if I remember correctly, they even gave the city a sum of money to put it together.

Whether you like what BC Packers did to the waterfront or not (I did not), the company deserves to have its history remembered on the waterfront. And the two display boards and a metal framework representing the Imperial Cannery’s post don’t do a proper job.

We don’t need more t-shirt shops, sushi eateries or other forms of cuisine and kitsch, for we have enough of that now.
