Dear Editor,
Jagmeet Singh’s election as leader of the federal NDP is a game-changer in Canadian politics.
Being the first member of a minority community in Canada to lead a major political party is a commendable accomplishment for the young man from Brampton, Ontario.
In a sense, Singh has broken the glass ceiling for many others, especially the youth. He is a smart, calm, enthusiastic and articulate young man. Singh’s cool and calm response to a heckler in his hometown seemed to have been a turning point in his campaign.
His message of “love and courage” has caught on, especially with the youth.
As Davina Bhandar, an adjunct professor at SFU, has stated, Singh’s election should enable and empower him to navigate the debates about issues of racism and religious intolerance in an effective manner.
