Letter: It's your duty to stop

Dear Editor,

On Sunday, I had the displeasure of witnessing an altercation between an SUV and a cyclist in the crosswalk at No. 1 Road and Garry Street.

While three lanes of traffic managed to stop at the flashing lights, the fourth driver heading north in the curb lane decided it would be better to drift through, completely ignoring everything around them. Luckily, the cyclist was walking his bike so the collision was minor.

What disturbs me more than yet another incident at this intersection is the fact that none of the drivers who stopped — and obviously witnessed the accident — chose to remain at the scene and assist.

If it weren’t for a neighbour and myself who happened to be in our yards at the time, the young cyclist would have been left to fend for himself, in shock, with a very uncooperative driver, who could not produce a driver’s licence and refused to give a phone number.

This lack of engagement by the other drivers is sad and disappointing.

If you are a witness to a traffic accident, no matter how minor, take the time to offer assistance, provide your contact information, and take a few notes or photos yourself.

It only takes a few minutes and can make all the difference in settling a complex claim.
