Dear Editor,
Re: “Union wants higher base wage for all at YVR,” News, June 16.
Fipe Wong mentioned that she is unable to contribute to society with the amount of work she does to earn money.
She’s not alone.
The need to make money just to survive has become so overwhelming for many their ability to contribute to society is hindered.
However, low wages may still exist to ensure such hindrance. If people were given higher wages that allowed them the time to contribute to society, people might choose not to work as much, and thus the capitalist production cannot benefit from their labour.
Groups such as the VAA are compelled to overlook requests similar to the implementation of a mandatory minimum wage.
The fact that exhausted employees are working double jobs due to low base wages to make ends meet is a prime example of how capitalists continue to exploit peoples’ labour.
Low wages have become a way for capitalists to ensure people work in a manner that allows the capitalist society to thrive.
