Letter: Drivers: Turn signal isn't just for show

Dear Editor,

To Richmond drivers: People, please learn to signal your turn well before you brake.

It’s a simple concept that requires very little effort on your part.

There are far too many drivers braking and then at the last moment, or as they are already turning at a corner or driveway, decide to signal.

It’s against the law (inadequate signal/warning) and a common courtesy to your fellow drivers, who cannot read your mind and panic-brake behind you.

I suggest signalling about a half block, or 10 signal clicks, before you reach your turn.

Also, if you are driving in the left lane (close to the yellow centre line) and other cars are all passing you in the right (curb) lane, YOU should be in the right lane, unless you plan on turning left at the next corner.

Another simple concept: slower traffic keep right.

One more thing: At a flashing green light, pedestrian-controlled crosswalk (for example at No. 2 and Garrison roads), there is still a stop sign for traffic leaving Garrison which is travelling eastbound onto No 2 Road.

Just because the light is red for No 2 Road traffic doesn’t mean you can zip straight through the stop sign.

Just saying.
