Letter: City streets should ‘lighten up’

Dear Editor,

Re: “City streets in the dark ages,” Dec. 16, 2015.

I’m not surprised I received a lot of feedback about my comments concerning the dim street lighting in certain areas of Richmond, which really proves it is a problem for pedestrians.

While I certainly agree with other Richmond News readers that pedestrians must do their part to keep safe from cars — keep arms, legs away from sidewalk’s edge, don’t horse around when at crosswalks and make judicious directional choices — my point was, if the lighting is so under illuminated that walkers can’t see more than a few feet ahead, and barely around themselves, it poses a big problem at night.

No one wants a tragedy, which could have been avoided by simply bumping up the wattage on public street lights.

Somewhere, a bad decision was made.  I hope the city will deign to correct it.

Stay safe out there! And drivers, please stop when we’re waving, so I don’t have to swear at you. I’m getting really good at it!
