Letter: Change habits, not the name

Dear Editor, Re: “Calling all RCMP,” Letters, April 26. The suggestion to re-designate roads is ludicrous. I have been living on Steveston Highway for more than 21 years. I don’t need a name change to remind me that it is not really a highway.

Dear Editor,

Re: “Calling all RCMP,” Letters, April 26.

The suggestion to re-designate roads is ludicrous.

I have been living on Steveston Highway for more than 21 years. I don’t need a name change to remind me that it is not really a highway. There are speed limit signs posted for all to see.

Furthermore, there are residences on both sides, except in the area that has farms. Motorists need to drive with caution as others slow down to enter their driveway.

Changing the designation is not going to change the speed habits of those habituated to drive on Steveston. The only thing that could possibly slow them down is a police vehicle cruising along.

Besides, changing a street name is not as cheap as one would think. It involves a lot of money that could be better spent improving the city’s amenities.

If you were to use the designation of a road to decide your speed limit, there would be no need to post speed limit signs. Follow the speed limit signs, and whether you call it a street, road or highway, you will have no problem with the RCMP.
