Dear Editor,
Re: “Richmond councillor warns about going ‘Donald Trump,’” News, June 15.
I wish to clarify a statement made in the above named article. The article stated that the Richmond Chamber of Commerce had offered translation services and no comment on the economic implications of Chinese-only signage. Our statement in full reads: “We know from our members that businesses are most successful in Richmond when they are able to serve customers in multiple languages. It is certainly a best business practice to ensure one of Canada’s official languages is included in public advertising. Chamber staff have already reached out to this business to see how we can help connect them to translation services and marketing support to ensure they introduce their business to the Richmond community in the best way possible. Unfortunately, our invitation was declined.”
Richmond has the great benefit of being the most ethnically diverse city in Canada. As such, a number of excellent businesses exist to aid newcomers in their introduction to the Canadian market. From translation services, marketing support and even language education companies, our chamber feels strongly that Richmond’s businesses are most successful when they work together to achieve their goals.
