Letter: Build the bridge, it will be good!

Dear Editor, I would like to add my voice in favour of the new bridge; the tunnel has been inadequate for years and upgrading it would be nothing but an expensive joke.

An artist's rendering shows the proposed, 10-lane bridge that is planned to replace the 54-year-old George Massey Tunnel, long known as one of the worst commuter traffic choke points in the Lower Mainland.

Dear Editor,

I would like to add my voice in favour of the new bridge; the tunnel has been inadequate for years and upgrading it would be nothing but an expensive joke.

Councillors Ken Johnston and Alexa Woo are the only ones on city council who have any sense.

Witness our good mayor, with all his negativity to the very idea of a bridge, now fearlessly saying, “We do not have any specific information that would allow us to form a reasonable decision on this.”

Really now, then why are you already against it before you have the information you seek?

The ministry says that 60 per cent of all traffic north through the tunnel stays in Richmond.

Why is this so hard to accept? Our population has tripled since I moved here and people have to go somewhere to work, there certainly aren’t enough jobs in Richmond for everyone who lives here.

Richmond may be an island but we are part of a road network serving the entire region, just as we cross Vancouver to get to North Vancouver or go through New Westminster to get to Surrey, people will be crossing us to get somewhere too and the backed-up tunnel just can’t do the job anymore.

I say get on with the job and let’s upgrade our infrastructure, it will benefit everyone.
