Dear Editor,
The vast majority of those familiar with the situation would agree there is a need to improve traffic flow on Highway 99 at the Massey Tunnel.
Having said that, people I talk to feel the proposed bridge is not the answer, and is a waste of taxpayers’ dollars.
Studies I have read, written by qualified persons, engineers and others, indicate this decision is not supported by those involved in building these types of crossings world-wide.
An immersed tunnel, comparable to the existing Massey Tunnel, would increase capacity to the required level at a fraction of the cost, and could provide for future transit lines, dedicated bus lanes, bicycle lanes, etc. and meet the needs of people.
Of course, any crossing should be part of a visionary Lower Mainland plan to move goods and services efficiently, as well as people trying to get to and from work without having to spend hours in their vehicles spewing exhaust fumes into the atmosphere.
Let’s forget about the bogus argument about the need to get larger ships up the Fraser River.
