Letter: Are doctors being priced out of the Richmond market?

Dear Editor, Re: “Medical system’s missing link,” Voices, April 14. I’ve just read your column.

The Seafair Medical Centre, in Seafair Shopping Centre on No. 1 and Francis roads, has closed after 25 years of operation due to a shortage of doctors.

Dear Editor,

Re: “Medical system’s missing link,” Voices, April 14.

I’ve just read your column. I wonder if maybe one of the pertinent questions might be to ask why there is a shortage of doctors?

Has the cost to earn a doctorate of medicine become out of reach for most? What can be done, if so?

One of the reasons might be that, in fact, the cost of malpractice insurance has recently taken a huge leap and the government hasn’t offered to help with subsidizing.

It may prohibit my own doctor’s private practice (early retirement).

The government has seen fit to cap a doctor’s income (there is most certainly a reason) but has it looked at whether a practice can survive with these caps? Or maybe a look at why malpractice insurance has had to increase so much.

Or maybe a look at a presumed increase in malpractice claims.

No judgement ... just saying.
