The Editor,

Re: “Stevestob Club may close if city doesn’t offer tax relief,” News Nov. 26.

I was very upset to read that the Steveston Army and Navy may close because of its high property tax bills.

With all the charitable work they do for the neighbourhood, they should be exempt altogether from paying tax like other charitable organizations.

It’s not like the city cannot afford it. Every year there is a multimillion dollar surplus that the council spends on its pet projects and we receive many millions of dollars in casino money, which is supposed to be going to the community.

I think it’s high time that the city honour our vets and forgive any taxes owing as it won’t even be noticed in the budget.
