Dear Editor,
Could the Interurban ride again?
Onni built an eyesore on the Fraser River in Steveston with city council’s blessing. Now, those buildings sit idle, gathering dust.
Down the street, tucked away out of sight, is an interurban tram. It, too, sits idle, gathering dust. Hmmm. Let’s clear away the dust and cobwebs and make a deal.
Onni — fund and restore the tram to its glory days. You get a charitable tax deduction and make a popular addition to Richmond’s culture. City council — bend a little, forget about “maritime commerce,” it ain’t gonna happen. Rezone the buildings.
Both of you, think of the public relations coup — the historic interurban tram running from Storybrooke, oops Steveston, through Richmond over the river to Marpole. Tourists would love it, our kids would love it, all of us would love it! It may not be a total win-win, but it sure beats the lose-lose stalemate we have today.
