I noted Otto Langer's letter to the editor ("Dredging up old rhetoric" Letters Jan.
4), and wonder if he'd just like to see the Fraser River all sanded in with no more commercial activity on it.
Talk about rhetoric - if Langer would look at our historic use of the river and the jobs it once provided - he'd remember that it was an economic artery for all riverfront municipalities.
So keeping key channels open for public and commercial access is still a pressing need. Ask any commercial fisherman, or longshoreworker, or recreational boater. This is "our" Fraser River - and we need it to continue to be an active part of our economic growth. And of course - we need to be diligent about protecting its environmental values. That's a critical part of the Fraser.
So hats off to the municipalities of Richmond and Delta, who are contributing to the dredging dollars - and to the BC government (including Minister Yap) and Port Metro and MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay for making this happen.
