Dear Editor,
Re: "Letters: Au's decision to stay on Richmond city council sets 'dangerous precedent'"
I respectfully disagree with Jerome Dickey’s recent letter criticizing Chak Au for choosing to retain his Richmond City Council seat after being elected as a member of Parliament.
In a time of growing financial pressure on municipalities, Coun. Au’s decision to avoid triggering a costly byelection is not only fiscally responsible but shows a level of prudence that voters should welcome.
Unlike others who may have resigned without consideration of the financial implications, Chak Au has opted to fulfill his local responsibilities without burdening taxpayers with hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional costs.
Let’s not forget: Au has stated clearly that he will donate his council salary to charity.
That’s not a distraction — it’s a demonstration of integrity and public service.
While some argue about optics or political tradition, others see a leader putting Richmond first, not ego or political theatrics.
We should applaud public officials who think practically and act in the best interests of the community.
In this case, Chak Au is balancing both roles during a transitional period, maintaining continuity at the local level while stepping into a federal role.
That’s not a conflict — it’s commitment.
Chak Au made a smart, financially sound decision for Richmond. That deserves recognition, not rebuke.
