Re: "Richmond not ready to endorse fin ban," News, Sept. 21.

David Chung, owner of Jade Seafood Restaurant and head of BC Asian Restaurant and Café Owners Association, has his head in the sand when it comes to serving shark fin.

He called an attempt to ban the use of shark fins in restaurants, including his own, a matter of "cultural insensitivity."

Do some research, Mr. Chung. Each year, 73 million sharks, who play a crucial role in the ocean ecosystem, are finned, thrown back in the ocean helpless and left to die.

If that's not insensitive, I don't know what is.

You don't know where your fins really come from, and it doesn't sound like you care. Fortunately, others do.

Hopefully, environmentally-sensitive local diners will avoid Jade and other restaurants who serve shark fin because they understand that culture can be celebrated - without decimating a species.
