Blocks slowed down speeding drivers

The Editor,

This evening I watched as new family home owners removed the cement barrier they had put up around the edging of their property at Cantrell and Calders roads.

I went and asked the gentleman why he was doing so. His reply was that the City of Richmond had ordered it to be done by tomorrow morning, a neighbour had complained.

The cement blocks they had put up did not beautify the home, nor was it a property line issue. Those blocks were put in place to slow the traffic down.

This house is right at the corner of both roads, which from both sides enters a near 90-degree curve. There are enough small children at play to qualify a speed reduction.

Low and behold, the speed of cars decreased significantly!

Seeing those blocks removed makes me wonder if the city is planning another alternative on this corner to decrease speeds? I guess we will have to wait and see.

I felt the city was very efficient in having a city worker arrive (in a city owned car) at 1: 25 p.m. the next day to take pictures to confirm removal.

I was surprised, though, at the high rate of speed this car travelled around the corner. The speed limits in Richmond apply to everyone, don't they?
