Open letter to MP Alice Wong,
I would like to express my pride for the great work your federal government is doing for Canadians. While the European Union has caved in to the silly recommendations of the scientists, extending Kyoto, your strong and righteous Conservative government has stood firm in its decision to back out.
While European countries have implemented carbon pricing schemes, you have changed your position from supporting cap and trade to rejecting all forms of carbon taxation. While much of the rest of the developed world is taking the revenues from carbon taxes and significantly investing in renewables, you ensure oil and coal flows freely and lightly taxed.
Basically, all the relevant research I have read in my four years of university have indicated with reasonable certainty that at our current rates of growth in aggregate fossil fuel consumption, this world's climate will be seriously damaged by 2050.
As severe weather events increase in frequency around the world in the last decade, I was very concerned. I used to think that I would be happy to accept a drastic economic slowdown for the safeguarding of our future prosperity.
But now, I've decided it all doesn't matter as long as I never have kids. The current trends seem to indicate Canada will fare quite well, or even benefit from climate change. As a business university graduate, I will probably be employed with a respectable income especially once we get out of this recession and I will probably die by the time the peasants from climate damaged countries claw at our gates to provoke war.
It's really quite wonderful - I will live like a king and people from other countries and from other generations will pay for it, all because of the policies that you are setting. For that, I am forever grateful. I am a Millennial, and this is the future that you leave for my generation.
