The Editor,
Re: "Environmentalists can't refuse everything," Opinion, Feb. 20.
In his column, Mr. Baldrey concludes that "protest rallies and demonstrations are easy to pull off. Governing without money coming in is not."
After Harper's fatal wounds to our environmental protection and fisheries acts recently, citizens must take action to protect what we can from federal politicians, such as the two other victims following the Kits Coast Guard Base as of March 28: the FREMP/BIEAP (Fraser River Estuary Management Plan/Burrard Inlet Environmental Action Plan) team.
As the proverbial "canary in the coal mine," these two merged programs are being mercilessly cut along with valuable research and alliances built since 1985. As of March 28, the continuity forged over years, will cease with the knowledgeable and dedicated staff's departure.
If Mr. Baldrey wants to point fingers, he should be aiming directly at Ottawa to militate for the reinstatement of the FREMP/BIEAP program and its partners "who have provided a framework to protect and improve environmental quality, to provide economic development opportunities, and to sustain the quality of life in and around the Fraser River Estuary and Burrard Inlet."
