Act on smart meters, MLAs

The Editor, Thank you for posting the "Urban Myth of BC" caricature. I have been stunned by Energy Minister Rich Coleman's response to the outrageous billing imposed on citizens who have the "smart-for-BCHydro-only" meters installed.

The Editor,

Thank you for posting the "Urban Myth of BC" caricature. I have been stunned by Energy Minister Rich Coleman's response to the outrageous billing imposed on citizens who have the "smart-for-BCHydro-only" meters installed. Coleman sounded completely detached from reality.

In November 2011, Richmond City Council passed a resolution (with unanimous votes) for a moratorium on smart meter installation and the choice to optout even by residents who already have these meters installed.

The Union of Municipalities, BC (UBCM) cast a majority vote for a similar resolution, and 40 individual city and town councils, representing about 1.6 million British Columbians, have voted to oppose smart meters as well.

Now that opting-out from smart meters has already been approved in California and Quebec, is it not time the B.C. Liberals wake up and listen to taxpayers?

Our three Richmond MLAs all belong to the Liberal party and all voted in favour of the smart meter program in 2010 at the provincial legislature.

At a public meeting in February this year, I inquired about this issue and asked for their help. Linda Reid said she was all for choice and would support a citizens' request for choice.

John Yap and Rob Howard both said they would try to convey Richmond residents' feedback to the provincial government.

It's been two months now. Have our MLAs taken any action to represent Richmond's opposition against smart meters? If not, when will they do that?
