TORONTO — Toronto police are looking for three suspects after a shooting in Toronto left one man dead and five others injured Tuesday evening.
Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon, Det. Sgt. Tiffany Castell said officers responded to the area of Ranee Avenue and Varna Drive near Yorkdale Shopping Centre in North York around 8:30 p.m.
She said three suspects approached a group of people and shot them before fleeing the area.
Castell said all three suspects were carrying firearms.
The suspects are described as males with slim to average builds, wearing dark clothing and face coverings.
Castell said six people were shot, including a 31-year-old man who was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Castell said the victim was in a wheelchair when he was shot.
A 19-year-old man, a 25-year-old man, an 18-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman and a 17-year-old youth were also shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
"This remains an active investigation," Castell said.
"We are asking anyone with information or video footage to come forward. That includes dashcam footage."
Castell said police believe the shooting was targeted and officers are investigating whether it was gang-related.
"This kind of violence causes a lot of pain and anxiety in our communities," said Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw.
"We will do everything we can to find those responsible for last night's brazen violence in Lawrence Heights."
