Ontario’s police watchdog says it is investigating after a York Region police officer shot and wounded a 30-year-old man in Toronto Thursday evening.

The Special Investigations Unit says officers tried to stop the driver of a car that was reported stolen at around 6:55 p.m.

The SIU says the driver was travelling on Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue East in Markham, Ont. and didn't stop.

It says officers boxed the car in as the driver collided with police vehicles before stopping in the area of Kennedy Road and Bonis Avenue in Toronto's east end.

The agency says an officer discharged a firearm at the man, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The SIU says the man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
