A petition started by a local student for a snow day in Richmond gained more than 3,000 signatures on Sunday after several centimetres of snow blanketed the city.

Muhammad Ghumman, in Grade 12 at Richmond Secondary School, started the online petition on Change.org to persuade the Richmond School District to close its schools on Monday due to snow and ice on roads and sidewalks that could make getting to school dangerous.

“This would be in the best interests for the safety of the parents and students who are part of the Richmond schools,” he wrote.

It snowed in Richmond for most of the afternoon on Sunday, and Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning.

David Sadler, spokesperson for the Richmond School District, told the Richmond News the district will make an announcement Monday morning if schools are closed. If there's no announcement, that means schools are open.
