After hours of snowfall overnight, the Richmond School District has announced that schools will be closed today.

Some private schools were closed Monday and continued closures into Tuesday. Confirmed Richmond private schools that remain closed due to weather include:

  • Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy
  • Cornerstone Christian Academy
  • St. Joseph the Worker

All of Kwantlen Polytechnic University's campuses remained closed on Tuesday as well, including the Richmond campus.

Classes at Trinity Western's Richmond campus are also cancelled.

Richmond has been under a snowfall warning since Sunday, with flakes expected throughout Tuesday as well.

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions,” said Environment Canada’s snowfall warning, updated Tuesday. “Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.”

The City of Richmond had crews out late into the night, plowing and salting "first priority roads."

The city is also warning drivers to remember to clear their vehicles of snow. On Monday, a Richmond driver was fined $109 for "vision obstructed" after it was seen still covered in snow.

Translink has warned of system-wide delays due to ice and snow today, and advised commuters to dress in warm layers in anticipation of waiting in the cold.

So far, Translink hasn’t tweeted about Canada Line delays, but reports from track level indicate there are longer-than-normal wait times between trains.
