Chimo Community Services has launched a non-profit initiative to give seniors the opportunity to help other seniors, after seeing a jump in calls regarding COVID-19-related challenges.

The organizations says those calls have increased 50 per cent to 71 per cent over the past few months, inspiring Chimo to launch the Seniors Helping Seniors Project to help older adults in vulnerable situations.

“Chimo is taking a leadership role in our community by stepping up to create the Seniors Helping Seniors Project, as an initial response to drive added awareness to providing continuous support to the senior members of our community through this difficult time,” said the organization in a statement.

Following the recent announcement of a one-time, tax-free top up of $300 for seniors who receive the Old Age Security (OAS) pension in Canada, Chimo received feedback from “financially secure” seniors wishing to re-direct their portion of payments to others who may need it more.

Contributions can be made through the Seniors Helping Seniors initiative, by making a donation online through CanadaHelps or sending a cheque payable to Chimo Community Services.
