Some private businesses are running fitness classes in parks without a city-issued permit.

As of next week, residents will be able to register for outdoor fitness classes – part of the city’s plan to restore services and activities placed on hold due to COVID-19.

Registration will open at 10 a.m. Monday, June 29, for fitness classes that will start Monday, July 6. All classes will be held outdoors to help ensure physical distancing, and reduce the spread of the virus.

Pre-registration for the outdoor fitness classes is required, according to the city:

  • Register online at richmond.ca/register using your MyRichmond account. Anyone without an account can set one up in advance at myrichmond.richmond.ca
  • Register by calling 604-276-4300
  • Individual classes or multiple sessions may be booked one week at a time
  • Registration will begin each Monday at 10 a.m. for classes held the following week
  • Drop-in attendance is not permitted

A range of fitness classes – such as Zumba, Kardio Kickboxing and Dance Fit, Yoga, Pilates Fusion and Ease Into Fitness – will be offered through community centres across Richmond.

However, strict protocols will be in place, according to a statement from the city. This includes, for example, physical distancing among participants; and no sharing of water bottles, towels, mats or other items. Other safety requirements, says the city, will be shared upon registration.

Anyone registering should not have any signs or symptoms of COVID-19, or experienced any in the past 10 days. Those registering, says the city, must also have not returned from outside Canada in the past 14 days, or been in contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.

The outdoor fitness classes are part of the city’s Restoring Richmond Plan. The plan utilizes a phased approach to restore recreational and community programs, services and amenities that were placed on hold in March due to the pandemic.

Updates to the plan will be shared on the city’s social media channels and website, at richmond.ca/covid19.
