Richmond Mounties plan for the ‘unthinkable’

It can be hard to know how to plan for the “unthinkable.” Earthquakes, fires, gas leaks, active shooters, air craft emergencies and terrorism all may be hard to imagine, but they are some scenarios that Richmond Mounties say they plan for regularly.

According to Richmond RCMP, systems and responses are regularly honed to improve responses and build “muscle memory” in the event of an emergency.

“With the ultimate goal of enhancing public and police safety, the Richmond Detachment Emergency Planning Unit is responsible for preparing detachment personnel to respond to critical incidents involving natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and epidemics, as well as human-induced emergencies, such as hazardous material spills and active shooter attacks,” said Sgt. Dave, Richmond RCMP emergency planning NCO in a press release.

"The detachment is always looking to afford our frontline personnel, the opportunities to rehearse practical skills surrounding threat suppression, casualty care, as well as command and control techniques essential to effective response outcomes. Operations-based exercises are ideal platforms for creating such opportunity.”

Mounties say they are regularly collaborating, sharing and incorporating best practices through internal exercises and large scale exercises with outside agencies.

Richmond RCMP added they would like to “thank the many different organizations that have also seen the value of preparedness and have shared, collaborated and offered their facilities in order to help (Mounties) train and achieve success in adverse scenarios.”
