Drivers in Richmond and Metro Vancouver are seeing new speed enforcement cameras at certain intersections across the province.

According to Colin Hynes, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Safety, the first five new cameras are activated today with the remaining 30 to be installed in phases up till next spring.

It is unclear which new five cameras are active.

The cameras will ticket drivers going over the posted speed limit on a red, yellow or green light when entering the intersection.

According to the Ministry of Public Safety, around 60 per cent of crashes on B.C. roads are at intersections and the new cameras are placed to ticket speeding drivers and to change their behaviours.

Twelve of the 35 intersections are in Vancouver and seven are in Surrey with one in Richmond.

The speed camera is located on Garden City Road at Cambie Road in Richmond.
