Burkeville residents have appealed to the Richmond School District to use Sea Island elementary this fall to create a “Burkeville bubble.”

A group of Burkeville parents and residents have written to the school district asking 58 students from their community be redirected from Brighouse elementary, which is currently at capacity with 500 students in 22 classes, to Sea Island elementary.

Sea Island elementary was closed in June 2019 because only 13 students were registered there.

The letter states a survey was conducted and found there are 58 students from kindergarten to Grade 7 living in Burkeville. They suggest creating three split-grade classes at Sea Island thereby freeing up three classrooms at Brighouse elementary.

“Returning our children to Sea Island is a win-win situation, for both our community and the Brighouse community as well,” the letter states.

If the status quo continues, students who are bused from Burkeville to Brighouse will be exposed outside the 60-student learning group they are assigned to, explains the letter from the Burkeville residents.

The letter has 31 signatures, 16 of whom are parents and 15 of whom are “community supporters.”

Sea Island is currently used by two child-care facilities, continuing education and CUPE.
