March 11 is set as the opening day for the new Minoru Centre for Active Living with a pool, seniors centre and event centre.
The centre’s opening has been a year and a half later than previously expected, but city staff say it’s still on budget. The pool and fitness centre are 69,000 square feet, the seniors centre with a lounge, billiards room, cafeteria, multipurpose rooms, a music room, and woodworking shop and arts studio is 33,000 square feet, and other event space is 8,000 square feet. The event centre will support fields next door with eight changing rooms, washrooms, a first aid room, a concession and multipurpose room with a view of the field.
Drop-in programs will start on March 11 as long as the occupancy permit is in place, and registered programs will start over the following weeks.
The Minoru Seniors Society will run two food services – a cafeteria and a bistro.
The pool has two 25-metre lap pools, a leisure pool, two hot pools, two saunas, a steam room and a cold plunge pool.
