Moving house - along the Fraser River in Richmond

Someone was spotted moving house in Richmond today.

Not really newsworthy at all, unless you are literally moving your entire house, by barge, along the south arm of the Fraser River.

This interesting sight was captured by Richmond photographer Denis Beauvais at around 12:30 today, heading west by Deas Island Park.

Beauvais guessed the three-level new build was constructed in New Westminster and was being shipped to one of the islands, which is apparently cheaper than hauling material and building from scratch on an island.

However, in fact, the house was built on land in Delta at International Marine Floatation Systems.

At launch, it weighed approximately 180 tons or 360,000 pounds and is now at its permanent location in Ladner, on River Road.

According to the company that built the “float home,” it was designed to be very energy efficient and will be capable of full operation off grid.
