A person looking to dispose of three hand grenades demonstrated what not to do Thursday evening by bringing them to the Steveston police station.
The person arrived around 5 p.m., pre-WWII era grenades in hand, and Richmond RCMP had to call in the bomb squad.
Cpl. Dennis Hwang doesn’t think the person had any malicious intent, but he’s still reminding people not to bring explosives into police stations.
“If you’re confused about what to do with a device like this, please call us and describe what you have,” Cpl. Dennis Hwang said. “We will come to you.”
An area near the Steveston Community Centre was behind police tape while explosive specialists worked. The bomb squad finished detonating the grenades by 7:45 p.m.
Hwang said these incidents happen more often than one would think. He’s heard of people finding surprise explosives while clearing out the homes of loved ones who have died.
“It’s not the first time,” he said.
