MONCTON, N.B. — Ben Flanagan ran the fastest 5K ever recorded on Canadian soil to win the national championships on Sunday.
Julie-Anne Staehli won the women's title at the Canadian 5K championships.
Flanagan, a 27-year-old from Kitchener, Ont., crossed the finish line in 13 minutes 38 seconds, narrowly missing Charles Philibert-Thiboutot's Canadian record of 13:35 set in Boston in April.
Flanagan beat his own Canadian soil record of 13:56, set when he won the same event in 2018.
Staehli, a 28-year-old from Lucknow, Ont., won the women's race in 15:55.
Sasha Gollish added another Canadian masters record to her resume. The Toronto native ran 16:45 to finish fifth, breaking the 40+ 5K record by nine seconds.
Since turning 40 in December, Gollish has smashed numerous masters track records, including the world indoor and Canadian outdoor records in the 1,500 metre, and the Canadian record in the 5,000.
