The McMath Wildcats have been seeded ninth for the B.C. “AAA” Girls Field Hockey Championships which get underway on Wednesday in Surrey.
The city’s only high school team locked up another provincial berth in the recent Vancouver/Richmond Zone playoffs with a second place finish. The Wildcats defeated Eric Hamber 2-1 before falling 4-1 to Churchill in the Carey Cup final.
McMath will open play with a pivotal game against No. 8 Heritage Woods before facing No. 3 Kelowna. The Wildcats will conclude round-robin action on Thursday against No. 14 Panorama Ridge. The top two teams from each of the four pool groups advance to the quarter-finals on Thursday afternoon.
TJ Sander’s squad is coming off a best-ever fifth place finish a year ago.
The semi-finals and placement games will be played on Friday. Tamanawis and Cloverdale Athletic Park are the tournament venues.
North Vancouver’s Handsworth Royals are the top seed. No. 2 Cowichan, No. 4 Oak Bay and No. 5 South Delta round out the top five.
