Wildcats are Juvenile Girls city champs

McMath avenges earlier loss to unbeaten Hugh Boyd

The McMath Wildcats are the latest city basketball champion —  avenging their only loss of the season to capture the Juvenile Girls title.

The Wildcats held off the Hugh Boyd Trojans 36-28 on Wednesday night. Both teams head to next week’s Vancouver and District Championships on the North Shore where they will be joined by third place finisher RC Palmer.

The Trojans were looking to complete an unbeaten run through city opponents after going 9-0 in regular season play then producing playoff wins over Burnett and McRoberts. What separated them from McMath was a 34-27 win back in early December.

This time the Wildcats opened up a 13-4 lead after one quarter then outscored the hosts 17-4 in the third.

Boyd won the second (10-4) and fourth quarters (10-0) but the hole was too big to climb out of.

Tamar Gordon scored seven of her nine points in the opening eight minutes, while Carina Wevers led the third quarter charge with eight of her 10 points. Kiayra Hohlweg led all Wildcat scorers with 11.

Quincy Hinds led Boyd with 10 points, that included eight in the final quarter.

More city titles will be determined Thursday with championship games for Senior Girls (7:30 p.m. at Burnett), Junior Boys (5 p.m. at Cambie) and Juvenile Boys (5 p.m. at Richmond High).
