Tunnel Cup series resumes Thursday

Sockeyes look to secure honours with win at Minoru

The Richmond Sockeyes hold a 2-0-1 lead in their season series with the Delta Ice Hawks and can clinch the Tunnel Cup with a win at home on Thursday.

Richmond Sockeyes will have a chance to secure the Tunnel Cup for the first time in its brief history when they resume their rivalry with the Delta Ice Hawks on Thursday night.

Thanks to 6-2 victory in Ladner back on Oct. 23, the Sockeyes can clinch the four-game regular season series with a regulation or overtime win. Game time is 7 p.m. at Minoru Arenas.

The teams also battled to a 2-2 draw back in early September and are slated to meet again in late January in Ladner.

The Tunnel Cup was introduced a year ago and the Ice Hawks needed a regulation win in the final meeting to edge the Sockeyes for the honours.

The teams will enter tomorrow’s tilt with identical 16-5-1-1 records — good enough for second overall in the league standings and six points back of front-running North Vancouver (20-4-0-0).

Delta defeated Abbotsford 5-2 on Tuesday night and are riding a six-game win streak.

The Sockeyes rolled to a 10-1 romp of still winless Surrey last Thursday before dropping  a 4-3 decision in Abbotsford 24 hours later.
