Steveston-London secondary's Grade 8 Bantam girls basketball team is heading to provincials.

Richmond's Steveston-London (SLSS) Grade 8 girls basketball team concluded their season after competing in the provincial championships earlier this month.

The 25th annual B.C. Grade 8 Championships, hosted by Fleetwood Park and Sullivan Heights secondary schools, took place from Feb. 29 to March 2.

Despite a loss during their zone games, the Sharks earned a wild card entry due to their undefeated season, according to Jenna Bindra, assistant basketball coach at SLSS.

"We were so excited and emotional to hear this news and honoured to be able to compete at such a level," said Bindra.

The Sharks secured victories against Little Flower Academy (32-30) and South Kamloops (31-39). However, they faced defeats against Vernon (31-35) and Samuel Robertson Technical (52-25) during the championships.

"Teams in provincials definitely provided us with the challenge of making a fun and intense game," said Bindra.

She added the regular season began with new rules for Grade 8 basketball such as "equal playing time and half court."

"The progress the girls have made over the course of the season is tremendous and each of them plays an essential role on the team."
