Richmond's softball community honoured at B.C. gala

The Richmond Girls Softball Association won a number of accolades at the annual awards

The Richmond softball community has been recognized with a number of awards at the recent Softball BC Gala and Awards Dinner.

The Richmond Girls Softball Association (RGSA) won the Large Association of the Year award, as well as the Zeone Andrijaszyn Volunteer of the Year Award (Al Groff and Barry Riva), the Minor Division Service Award (Jerry Bains) and the Men’s & Women’s Division (Adult Team Division) Service Award (Al Groff and Barry Riva).

The volunteer award won by RGSA president Groff and Riva was named after former RGSA executive, Zeone Andrijaszyn, who was “such a great volunteer in the softball community,” said Groff.

“He was the father of four softball-playing daughters and gave so much back to the game.

“Barry and I were privileged to be the recipients of this very prestigious honour.”

Groff said Minor Division Service Award winner Bains was equally thrilled with his accolade, having volunteered for many years with Softball BC.

Of the association award, Groff said that “many hands make light work,” paying tribute to the many people who help make softball in Richmond such a success in running off season clinics, league games, tournaments and provincial/western championships.

“Volunteers from the association coach teams, coach clinics, umpire, run concession, work fields, and serve on the executive,” added Groff.

“The award by (Softball BC) is greatly appreciated and will be shared by all.”
