A Richmond figure skater took home the silver medal at his first international competition.

William Chan, 14, competed in the advanced novice men category at the ISU Coupe Du Printemps in Luxembourg in March.

He competed as part of Team Canada and placed second, with a total of 108.52 points, while going up against seven other countries.

“I was super excited when I found out about winning silver and I wanted to tell my dad as soon as I entered the dressing room. I was super happy,” said Chan.

“It’s a first time for me to represent Canada and compete with international competitors.”

Competitions and nervousness go hand-in-hand for everyone, but Chan didn’t let that stop him during his short and long programs.

“I was very nervous during the first (skate performance), but I calmed down later on in the competition,” said Chan.

“In the end, there’s going to be bigger competitions and I should worry about this one.

He added that this is an experience that will help him grow as a figure skater.

“Obviously, I want to do well, but it’s not the end of the world if I make a mistake. I’ll learn from it and do better next time.”
