In a battle of a couple of Richmond standouts, Ziggy Nathu has his first victory as a professional golfer.
Fresh off an impressive university career with the UBC Thunderbirds, Nathu fired a 9-under 63 to capture the Vancouver Golf Tour’s Winter Tour stop last week at the Chilliwack Golf Club. That was good enough for a two stroke victory over former Simon Fraser University standout and Canadian Amateur Team member Chris Crisologo.
Both players turned professional at the end of the summer.
Nathu got off to a sizzling start with birdies on four of his first five holes and never looked back. It was another hot stretch on the back nine that featured another 4-under stretch over five holes that secured the title.
The Hugh Boyd Secondary graduated closed out his amateur career with a busy stretch that was highlighted by a playoff victory at the 33rd PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship in Florida. He also helped UBC capture the national title.
He has been working with Nathan Leonhardt four about a year — the Richmond professional who launched the Tour Development Academy to mentor aspiring players.
