A local athlete is representing Team Canada at the upcoming Taekwon-do World Championships in September.
Iveta Griffith, 20, was selected to compete in the individual and team sparring categories in Finland after showcasing her skills at the national team tryouts.
“Getting chosen for the team truly feels surreal! I am excited to make my coaches, parents, and teammates proud,” she said.
“Most of all, I look forward to setting an example for my students and being the best mentor I can!”
Griffith began practicing martial arts when she was four years old and has spent “countless hours” mastering the art of taekwondo, coach Johnny Ahmed told the Richmond News.
“(Griffth’s) selection to Team Canada is a testament to her unwavering dedication, hard work, and passion for taekwondo,” said Ahmed.
Griffith is currently undergoing “intensive training sessions and strategic planning” in preparation for the championships. For those interested in supporting Griffith, she has also started a GoFundMe page to fund her trip to Finland.
